The island nation of Vanuatu is made from clusters and chains of beautiful and tropical provinces and islands. At the heart of the country lies the capital city of Port Vila. The commercial and economic center of the country, Port Vila is also one of the tiny nation’s most popular tourist destinations. The city is also the home of the country’s most important harbor and gateway to Vanuatu.

The predominant industries of Port Vila are agriculture and fishing, with tourism rapidly catching up with these other two. The city sees approximately fifty thousand visitors each year, many coming from nearby Australia and New Zealand, but more and more coming from elsewhere in the world. Activities in Port Vila

There are many opportunities for visitors to Port Vila to enjoy water sports such as fishing, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving, as well as boating, canoeing or kayaking. The city is also excellent for pedestrian activities with a host of restaurants, shopping, markets and street vendors providing plenty of entertainment.

With a population of fewer than forty thousand full time residents, the city is a great place to visit, wander and tour. The pace is much slower and the residents are known for their hospitality and friendliness. The predominant background for many residents is the Melanesian culture, with small groups of Polynesian, Asian, European, French and British residents as well. Such a diverse population really gives the city a unique flavor and international appeal.

Bislama language

The day to day language of the Port Vila residents is Bislama, considered one of the creole languages, and the country’s national anthem “Yumi, Yumi, Yumi” is in the Bislama language. Most citizens of Vanuatu and Port Vila also speak English and French quite well; this is probably because the Bislama language is based in large part on the English tongue, with a few dozen remaining words or terms coming from the French language. An observant traveler to the city will also note the presence of many indigenous languages throughout the unique city.

Bauerfiled International Airport

Any visitors to the nation of Vanuatu are more than likely to encounter the city, even if only for a brief period as the Bauerfield International Airport is housed in Port Vila. Here guests can join one of the many tours of the city, or set out on their own to explore the many wonderful neighborhoods.

The airport has duty free stores and car rental services available, as well as currency exchange shop. Mini buses and taxi services are also available for incoming visitors.
